Fern Lake – May 2019
Yep, you read the headline right. Lots of snow up in the park in late May this year. The lake was completely frozen over and covered in snow. Sure was pretty though.

I thought I’d captured a great pic of Trevor snowboarding. So I posted it to Facebook… or tried to. It kept timing out so I thought it didn’t go. I gave up. But some people saw it and liked it. But I still can’t. Thanks Facebook.

That’s How It Goes
I had a free day to go shoot in the park. I had taken a nice long hike but didn’t really find anything that interesting all day. I was about 1/2 mile from my house when I saw this iconic Estes Park shot- elk fighting AND the Twin Owls. Just another example of being ready when the scene presents itself.

Night Sky Times 2
Beaver Meadows and Monument Rocks, night sky.
Recently I had the opportunity to do night sky photos in 2 amazing yet different places, 2 days apart. Beaver Meadows (left) and Monument Rocks (right). Both nights were clear but the new moon was much brighter at Monument Rocks. The additional light was good for lighting up the rocks but it made the Milky Way much dimmer. At Monument Rocks I used 1 – 2 f-stops less.
Regardless, I enjoyed the amazing nights with a couple of good friends.

I wish I could say I found this house off the beaten track, high in the mountains but the truth is it was just at the beginning of a trail head in the front range.

Moose and Water
Moose…finally. I chose a super windy day to drive up Trailridge. It was too windy for elk so I headed on down the west side. This girl was taking her time eating the spring grass. I had wanted a moose pic for a long time and finally got my chance.

Wilson Lake
I spent a couple days roaming around central Kansas. Just hiking around with my camera. On the second day I was at Wilson Lake, northwest of Salina. Some really nice rock formations. I thought I’d do some astral photography with those rocks in the foreground but there was too much light in the north from the city of Lucas. I don’t think the night sky shot would’ve been better than this though.

Transition
Canon to OM-D.
On this trip I only brought the Olympus OM-D. The change from a larger DSLR to the mirror-less system meant I found myself willing to take the camera with me everywhere. Even to one of the last snow storms of the winter.

Christmas 2017
Headed up into the mountains to see some snow. I took these with an Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II. Since it is a new model to me I was in a “use it to learn it” mode and left the Canon back at the cabin. It was a great experience. Attaching it to the Peak clip on my backpack strap I hardly knew it was there. In short, it was a nice downsize and I was very happy with the images.
